Implementation of the DVD set.

The Atom & Quark Adventure set was tested in real classrooms and implemented in a variety of different ways that have produced impressive results and enthusiastic learners. Here are a few ideas on how to implement your Atom & Quark DVD set in your learning environment.

Whole group instruction
Teacher directed

Summary:

In this manner the teacher is the coordinator of the adventure. He or she guides the students through the content one section at a time. The DVDs are engineered so that you can start on any topic you want. You can let the students decide where to start and go from there.

Specific details:

Brief the students on the purpose of the DVD series, give them the general plot (or have them see the Atom & Quark introduction site page) where the video message asks them to help.

Whole group instruction
Inquiry based

Summary:

Here the teacher directs all questions and decisions to the students. Field the input as suggestions and then get student feedback as a class to determine the choices that are made on the DVD.

Specific details:

Have the students see the sections once. Have them fill in what they can with the mission logs. Then without helping, run the section again on the DVD. Ask for student input on what the data should be on the mission logs. Have them fill it out. The teacher should coach them on what the correct data should be without telling the correct answers.

Whole group instruction

Student directed

Summary:

Put the DVD navigation in the hands of the students. Allow them the opportunity to make the choices and guide the class through the DVD.

Specific details:

The teacher might need to model this first.

Small group instruction
The station model

Summary:

The DVDs can be used as two independent stations in a rotation of 5 or 6 other stations. This schema would make a very well-rounded inquiry based approach for students learning about space.

Specific details:

There are other extension ideas provided in the DVD set that could be used in conjunction with the DVD set to make some very dynamic multi-stage learning centers.

Small group
Independent work

Summary:

In a computer lab setting or a classroom with at least 5 computers, (this would require multiple copies of the DVD - one per computer) students can navigate the entire DVD and all of its data completely on their own and in any order they choose to complete it.

Note: Because the DVDs are not software, they can be moved from one set of computers to another or from one classroom to another legally.

Specific details:

There are other extension ideas provided in the DVD set that could be used in conjunction with the DVD set to make some very dynamic multi-stage learning centers. According to the research about children and computers done by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, no more than 4 children should be at the computer at any one time for maximum effectives of content transfer to take place.
